Speculation Time
Come on and grab your friends! Guess what's happening with the Movie Theater and Parking Garage downtown, or the SkyWest Golf Course and California Air National Guard Base.
City Council Closed Session Items
Welcome to Speculation Time! This will be covering the items that fall under Closed Session on the City Council agenda. We have no way of knowing what is being discussed in these talks other than what they’re generally about, so I’ll be here making educated/facetious guesses on what they could be.
Something with the Movie Theater and the Parking Garage
Maybe this has to do with the charging station? But since it includes the Movie Theater, as well, maybe there’s something more going on. My dream would be for more municipal ownership of Things, but that’s almost certain to never happen. Likely it’ll be some kind of bailout of the movie theater as it, along with Buffalo Bill’s, are the two main anchors to Downtown.
Maybe if we follow through on the Downtown Specific Plan and undo the Loop, we wouldn’t have so many failing businesses on Foothill and we could be less reliant on the whims of a few landlords on B Street.
SkyWest and the California Air National Guard properties.
SkyWest Golf Course, formerly developed and managed by HARD, is going to be redeveloped. Despite community outcry (both in Hayward and San Lorenzo, which is right next to it) for more parks and wilderness in the area, the Hayward Executive Airport needs to make money, so the plan is for more commercial.
The California Air National Guard base is located next to the Station 6 Fire Station, and also on Hayward Executive Airport land and will doubtless be in discussions to redevelop it for some purpose. It appears, by all outside appearances, to have been vacant for some time, so that seems like a good idea. No idea what’s going in there, though, so what would you like to see over there? Cast your imaginary votes now!
